I was born about 500 metres from the old Lifeboat House at the end of the Quay. I was lucky to have spent all my working life in Poole.
I have a photo of me at the age of three on the wheel of one of the old Sandbanks / Shell bay ferries with my Father who was a skipper at the time. A few years later, going out resetting and checking set nets before going to school. Trawling in the spring and summer. Taking out anglers into the bay to fish, and spratting in the winter. Working on a 100ton Motor Vessel and also on the Wareham river.
Joined Poole Lifeboat Crew when the Inshore Rescue Boat ( now called Inshore Lifeboats ) came to Poole in 1965, following in the footsteps of my Father and Grandfather. I retired after 36 years, the last eight as 2nd Coxswain. During that time I took a RYA/DTP Coastal Skipper and Yacht Master Offshore, shore based course (1987) plus another Marine Courses.
Joined Dolphin late 2012 and after doing training and taking a Helmsman, First Aid and a Radio Course to bring me up to speed again, I was appointed a Skipper in July 2014. The joy I get from doing Dolphin is with the different groups of people we take out, seeing and hearing the excitement from them when we return, after going around the harbour which I love.
